Why, exactly, does reading for pleasure promote wellbeing?

For many readers, it takes just a page or two to feel that slipping away, totally relaxed state, not unlike the first moments of a hot bath. We know that reading leaves us feeling calmer, lighter, more ready for the world—but why is that? What makes reading such an elixir for stress relief?
They say just five minutes of fiction can reduce stress by up to 20 per cent—and studies have shown that reading is actually the fastest way to reduce stress (source). For World Mental Health Day on October 10, we thought we’d explore the science behind that.
If you’re also curious, here are the lesser-known and wonderful mind-body connections between reading and wellbeing.
When you’re reading and concentrating on a good book...
…your brain is restoring balance and calm
Brain imaging studies show a connection between reading and the parts of the brain that support emotional regulation, decision making, language and learning (source).
…your body shifts into a rest state
Reading lowers stress hormones, namely, cortisol.
…your brain pauses on all the problems
Where the mind might normally try to focus on the worries of the day and stir up anxious feelings, reading is an escape from all that.
…your body gets even more relaxed
Reading reduces the heart rate and muscle tension caused by stress.
…your mind steps even further away from fears, and regains focus and control
Now that you’ve been reading for a few pages and you feel a sense of calm, the amygdala, home to fears, becomes quieter, while the cortex, home of rational thoughts, becomes more active—inspiring clear-headedness and confidence.

How can you add an extra dose of wellness to your reading? Do it with others!
Book clubs can enhance the wellbeing of reading with an element of socialization. The laughter, conversation and time spent at book clubs are beneficial for mental health today and long-term.
This must be partly why there’s a feeling of euphoria at Big Book Sale: all the joys of reading plus the uplifting feeling of socializing with other readers!
· If you’re looking for a book club, anyone can join Big Book Club. It’s a group that meets monthly in the morning. It’s for curious Calgarians who like to think, and what gives even more to take away is a presenter joins in guiding the discussion.
· If you’re looking for reader-y things to do in Calgary, join the Big Book Sale newsletter (scroll to the bottom of the home page) and we’ll share upcoming events straight to your inbox
· Stay tuned for Big Book Sale 2027 dates! We usually have these set in the new year and get to share these in January-February.
Now, back to that book and feeling wonderfully relaxed!
